Below are some questions that we hear a lot from potential applicants. If you would like to know something that isn’t listed, please shoot us an email.
Why do you have age restrictions for applicants?
CHOISES was founded to provide co-operative housing to Sydney’s young women. We ask for applications from interested candidates from ages 16-25 as a way of keeping our community younger and maintaining this vision.
Is this social housing?
CHOISES is an independently run co-operative, with operating decisions made by our members in consultation with our governing body.
Can I have a housemate?
If you successfully become a member of CHOISES, we encourage you to get a housemate. Each of our units has two decently sized bedrooms, and living with someone else will help to keep your rent cheaper and add to our community.
How long can I live at CHOISES?
We have age requirements for applicants to keep our community focused on younger women. However, once you are accepted as a member, you can stay on and live here until you are ready to move on.
What does the application process look like?
Once we receive your completed application, we will be in touch to invite you to attend one of our monthly meetings, where you can meet our members and get a sense of what to expect from life in CHOISES. This is followed by the final stage which is an interview.
How much work is expected of co-op members?
Like most workplaces, some times of the year we may be very busy with projects, and other times we may have a lull. It is worth thinking about your time commitments carefully before you apply.
Can I live at CHOISES with my partner?
Although only women can become members of CHOISES, we allow members to live with their partners in the co-operative.
Can I have a pet?
We assess candidates with pets on a case by case basis, depending on what other animals we have in our community at that time. At the moment, we unfortunately can’t cater to potential members with pets.
How much will my rent be?
Our rent structure is equitable, so the amount changes for each member based on factors such as income. Please contact us for more info.
